Bernie

Bernie Thoma is from the Syracuse area and spent his formative years in Liverpool, New York. Upon graduation from high school, he spent a short time in college and then was drafted by the Army. Bernie spent two years in Germany while in the Army, and when he returned stateside, he enrolled at Tompkins Cortland Community College and then SUNY Cortland. At SUNY Cortland, Bernie pursued and received both undergraduate and Masters degrees.

Having a background in the building trades, in 1978 Bernie was hired by the City of Cortland as a housing rehabilitation specialist for the City's Community Development Block Grant program. Eventually Bernie became the Office Director. A series of events resulted in Bernie's decision to become a consultant and, thus, Thoma Development Consultants was born in 1980.

In addition to his formal education, since 1980 Bernie has gained significant hands-on experience working with our customers. He is responsible for project oversight for all consulting assignments. His extensive experience in the areas of housing, community development, and economic development, regardless of project size or scope, is a benefit to our customers. In recent years, Bernie began using his broad background and analytical skills to undertake feasibility and market analyses. This has resulted in a broader array of services that we offer to our customers. Bernie's personal and professional contacts in local, State, and federal governments have also proven to be beneficial to our customers. These contacts allow our company to remain current on funding opportunities as they become available.

Bernie's management style and leadership skills encourage individual employee growth while maintaining a team-based approach in order to better serve our customers.
